Purchasing a new computer

It is far easier to buy your next computer than it is to purchase your first one, because those who've bought and operated a computer in the past already have an idea of what they require in a new computer, but those who are new to the computer world can easily become lost in the multitude of choices to be had.

The brief answer to "What should I buy?" is "the best." Of course that response is completely biased because "the best" to one person is not going to be the best to another. Our meaning of "the best" is the fastest and with the largest memory, but even that can leave the computer newbie puzzled. Here's a quick rundown of what the computer novice should do and why.

1. Purchase a computer that includes all the fundamental components. Every computer arrangement can be broken down into four major components: CPU unit, screen, keyboard, and mouse. For the novice, it's best to buy a computer that has all of these peripherals incorporated so that when it's taken home, assembling the computer is a uncomplicated affair of plugging the bits in where they belong. Save the individual purchase of these peripherals to those who have more understanding.

2. Make your mind up what you'll use the computer for. If you want to use your computer for cruising the web, sending email, or doing simple word-processing or spreadsheet tasks, a computer with the main peripherals that we just described plus a printer should be sufficient. If you want to use a computer to help with a career in multimedia, however, you're going to need to increase your system with maybe a scanner, digital camera, tablet, or digicam as well for instance. If you want a computer to help with a career in music, you might need a quality microphone and set of loud-speakers.

3. Create a budget and adhere to it. How much can you afford to spend on a new computer? Although the price of computers is declining, they can still be rather a large outlay especially if you want further peripherals as described previously. In addition, you'll have to factor in expenses for Internet access, maintenance, servicing, and insurance.

4. Start comparison shopping and search for the quickest and largest. By fastest and biggest, we imply the computer with the quickest processor, the quickest modem, the largest memory, and the biggest hard drive capacity. Even if you consider that you'll never need the amount of speed or space obtainable on the market today, it's important to have in the event that you truly do require that much in the future. Having such a large reserve will cut down on expenditure when the time comes to upgrade.

5. Stay with the better-known makes. Venturing off the trodden path with lesser-known brands is again an adventure for those who have more familiarity with computers. Although those better-known brands might be a tad more costly, the computer greenhorn will be grateful for the comfort of purchasing a computer from a shop that has a long history of building quality products, and that has the funds on hand for fulfilling returns, trades, servicing, and guaranties.

6. Choose a quality store. Once you have an idea of what you need in a computer and what sort of computer that you want, the only task left to do is to choose the place where you want to purchase it. There are many places, which embrace computer stores, online stores, auction sites and operated computer shops. For the computer beginner, we advise purchasing a computer from a bricks-and-mortar store. In a physical store, you have the chance to see the computer of interest itself and pose questions. New computer buyers will also have a store guarantee, returns, trades, and services.

These recommendations ought to give the computer newcomer a handy start in choosing a good computer for the first time and these recommendations apply to both Windows computers or Apple Macintosh computers. After making these decisions and eventually picking one that fits your needs, you can then venture into the spellbinding world of software – a world that is just as impressive as the world of hardware!

Computer Basics – by CCW Technology Salt Lake City, Utah

For those people looking to make their own computers, they might be overwhelmed by the sheer number of options and combinations available to them. However, you can save a lot of money making your own computer rather than purchasing a ready-made personal computers. Computers are made up over certain key components which should be considered first above all else, as they are like jigsaw pieces; only certain pieces fit with other pieces. Here are some tips to purchasing components for your computers.

Motherboard, RAM, Processor

A computer is made up of three core parts, excluding the case, power supply and a hard drive. These core parts allow everything else to function and once provided with power, the computer will turn on (though it won't get far without further information from the hard drive). They all play their own part in the functioning of the PC. The motherboard serves as a hub for the other components, but provides no performance boost of its own. Therefore, when choosing a motherboard, look for compatibility with newer components.

The central processing unit (CPU) is much easier to decide on. With your motherboard in mind, you'll be restricted to a single series of CPUs, such as the new i3, i5 and i7 processors from Intel. Choose one to fit your budget and performance needs, keeping in mind that it's not only processing speed which matters, but also how many cores are provided.

With multiple cores, the processor can easily deal with multiple streams of information, meaning it beats other, similarly-powered processors that have lesser cores. For those who wish to multitask, a multi-core processor is a must. For overall increased performance, also consider purchasing high-quality RAM.

RAM (Random Access Memory) performs as temporary memory for the rest of the computer. Unlike the hard drive, which is designed for large storage over a long period of time with slow access speeds, RAM is designed for small storage over a short period of time with very fast access speeds. This makes it ideal for storing important or regularly used information that the CPU needs to access quickly. Obviously, the higher the speed and storage space, the better the RAM.

Power Supply

The power supply provides power to the entire computer, including every components within. When utilizing smaller power supply units (PSUs), even an additional hard drive or optical drive can make all the difference and may even result in your personal computer not switching on. For a larger computer using multiple hard drives and multiple graphics cards, consider at least a 700w+ power supply with the necessary power cables to juice up such components.

Geek (Computer) Terms

Non-technical people who have very limited experiences with computers may have a tough time purchasing one because they simply do not know what all of the technical terminology means. Luckily, this short guide will introduce you to some of the most important terms that you'll encounter when looking at the technical specifications of a computer.

The word PC is commonly used as a synonym for the word computer. PC is short for personal computer and though this phrase can describe pretty much any computer, it is more commonly being associated with machines that run the Windows operating system.

The operating system on a computer is very important. This is the major piece of software that determines which applications you can run and how you communicate with the computer itself. Some popular operating systems currently are Unix, Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.

There are different types of PCs that you can choose from. For example, there are now towers, netbooks, and laptops. Each type has different advantages and disadvantages, and each may come with its own pre-installed operating system depending upon the computer brand.

A tower is a computer that has been designed to stay in one location. They range in size, but they are larger than both netbooks and laptops. To use a tower, you will need to purchase additional equipment, such as a screen, keyboard, mouse.

Laptops and netbooks are all-in-one machines that are highly mobile. This means that you will not need to purchase additional equipment to work with them. They should work right out of the box.

When purchasing a computer, some of the more technical terms that you should notice include RAM (random access memory) and processor. The RAM denotes how much memory the computer has access to for running applications. Typically the more RAM you have, the faster your machine will be, but the overall speed will also depend upon the other components within the computer. The processor also determines how fast the machine will run and how many applications it will be able to run simultaneously.

When looking at computers, you should also pay attention to the size of their hard drives. The hard drive is where all of the software and files are stored. This includes your music, videos, and word documents. Larger hard drives will be able to accommodate more files than smaller hard drives.

How long should a computer last?

There was once a time when you would buy electronic devices and expect them to last for decades. When people bought a television or a radio, these items would last them forever. But times have changed, and a lot of people will now go so far as to replace their electronic devices every single year.

But in reality doing this is not an option for most of us, so we will want to get as much use as possible out of items such as computers. We really will want to get value for our money, because after all they are not cheap.

It is very hard to put an exact figure on the life expectancy for a computer; it depends on so many factors. On average, a computer will last for about three to five years, but there are many people who will have their computer for longer than this. How well the computer is looked after and the amount of use that it gets will determine how long it lasts. There are many people who don't bother to look after their computer at all, and these computers very rarely last longer than one year.

If you want to get more than five years out of your computer then you are going to have to learn how to take care of it. This means not only giving the keyboard and screen the occasional wipe with a cloth, but do a thorough clean. Make sure that you clear out your hard drive every so often by getting rid of any programs that you are not using, and you should also run a defrag every now and then.

A good anti-virus software program is another way to ensure that you get longer life out of it, so make sure you buy one. There are also other practical things you can do like not having fluids anywhere near your computer – especially if you are a bit of a caffeine addict.

Why didn’t Vipre (or my antivirus) catch this threat??

Why did VIPRE miss this threat?

Why didn’t VIPRE catch this threat?
Frequently Asked Questions

Why didn’t VIPRE catch this threat?

While this sounds like a straight-forward question, the reality is there are so many variables that come into play when you try to protect a machine against malware that it is almost impossible to give any one reason.

First, some background.

At this point there are over 13 million detections in the VIPRE signature files. There are hundreds of generic detections that can catch some new malcode before our analysts even see it. Also the MX-V technology in VIPRE can detect and stop a great deal of virus-like behavior.

But, and this is a big “but”, there may be as many as 50,000 new pieces of malcode arriving somewhere on the Internet EVERY day. We do see cases in which new malcode does make it through the VIPRE defenses. That isn’t a common occurrence. When malcode does make it through, many times we discover that an incorrect setup of the VIPRE installation is the problem. Based on our experience here are several reasons why a threat may have made it
through:

Improper configuration
  • Are you running the latest version of VIPRE? (On the front panel, Help | About)
User-added image
Help | About displays this:
User-added image
The first line of the “about” screen gives you the version that is running. To check to see if that is the latest version, you can check for the current version on GFI's web site below the “Details” button at: http://www.vipreantivirus.com/Software/VIPRE-Antivirus/

  • Are your definitions up to date / updating properly? These should never be more than a few hours old. Click on the VIPRE icon in your task bar and you will see this:

User-added image

This is the “Overview” (notice the tab at the top). The “Updates” section tells you if your definitions are current or out of date.
User-added image

If you click “update now” the signature updates will begin to download.
User-added image

  • Is active protection enabled? To check this, click “edit settings” in the “Active Protection” section:

User-added image

  • Be sure that the Enable Active Protection box is checked. That is the default setting.

User-added image

  • Have you configured VIPRE to quarantine threats, or are the threat actions set to report only? This is only an issue with VIPRE Enterprise which ships with “report only” as the default action. This control is either under the scan tab or the active protection tab in Enterprise consoles. The reason for this is so that new VIPRE installations don’t delete certain diagnostic tools and other applications that systems administrators use, which can be considered malware under other circumstances. Having VIPRE report them gives the administrators an opportunity to white list them before making VIPRE fully functional (which would detect and possibly delete the diagnostic tools.)
  • Do you have “Enable rootkit detection” enabled for quick scans or deep scans?
  • Do you have “Scan the registry” enabled. This is important because it allows VIPRE to find the services are left by Conficker.
User-added image

  • (Enterprise edition only.) Do you have VIPRE configured to scan more than just common threat locations? On the scanning tab in all possible policies, the control “scan common threat file types only” should be unchecked. If this is left checked it will cause the quick scans to miss files with obfuscated extensions.
I got infected by an old threat. Why did VIPRE fail to catch it?

Malware authors are very dedicated to making money at your expense. They monitor which AV companies are detecting their malcode, make changes, and then do their own testing until they feel there is a good chance that their malcode will evade detection by most antivirus products.

They then release that version into the wild. This is why threats seem to wax and wane. A particular malware author will continue to release new variants until it is caught by the majority of AV products. Then they will move on to a whole new project.
The fastest way for us to provide protection for any new variant is to obtain samples of the threat as soon as possible so that we may make the changes needed to allow VIPRE to identify this new code as malicious. We have teams assigned to hunting down and finding these new variants so we can be as proactive as possible, but with the number of new threats being released every day we have to also be very reactive.
How do I submit a new threat?
If you encounter a threat that you would like to have added to our definitions and you are able to locate the malicious files on your machine, they can be directly submitted here:

**There is an option to request assistance with malcode removal. If you check this box you will be contacted by a technician who will begin collecting the information we need to remediate your infection.

A threat is being detected over and over again. Why does it keep coming back?

If this is the case, it is likely that you are infected with a new variant of an existing threat and there has been something new added to it that we need to identify so that we can protect against it.

To help ensure that we are able to obtain samples of these threats as fast as possible we offer an incentive very rare to the antivirus industry. In the event that a threat is not completely removed by VIPRE we provide FREE remediation assistance. This means that we will collect information from your system and then, if need be, we will remote into it and repair the damage done by the infection. As a part of this remediation we collect any samples found on the system and use that to update our definitions. To learn about how to obtain the fastest possible resolution, please review the document titled “How do I get help removing this infection?”

How did I get infected / where did this infection come from?

Without having extremely detailed network logging in place at the time of infection, it is virtually impossible for us here at GFI to tell you with certainty how you became infected. Here is a list of the more common methods of infection so that you know what to look out for:

  • Malicious links: (never click on a link unless you know the target destination is safe)
  • Drive-by downloads: these are the download of spyware, a computer virus, or any kind of malware that happen without knowledge of the user. Drive-by downloads may happen when you visit a website, view an e-mail message or click on a deceptive popup window. Many users click on the window in the mistaken belief that, for instance, it is an error report from their own PC or that it is an innocuous advertisement popup. In such cases, the malicious "supplier" may claim that the user "consented" to the download though he or she was completely unaware of having initiated a malicious software download.
  • Exploits: these are pieces of malware that take advantage of a weakness in a web browser, e-mail client, Adobe Flash installation or operating system. They install themselves without any user intervention whatsoever. Many take advantage of older vulnerabilities in applications or operating systems that don’t have the latest updates installed. This is why it’s important to install updates promptly.
  • Email attachments: infected attachments that arrive in spam emails can infect machines then send emails to everyone in the users address book. These spoofed email messages will contain some kind of enticing story to get you to follow a link to a malicious site or open an attachment which is actually the installer for the malware.

Windows XP Security

Here are a couple of tips to speed up your Windows XP computer and help keep you protected and secure online. First you need to control which programs load on startup: Many of the programs you install on your computer automatically configure themselves to launch at startup, usually invisibly. The truly essential ones, such as anti-virus and firewall products, generally run as services and run fine in the background. Other less important software like media players don't need to be running continually.

These extra programs slow the boot process and then severely suck up resources like memory and CPU cycles. It is pretty easy to control which applications launch on startup. The System Configuration Utility lists all these applications in one place:

1) To get there: Click the ‘Start' button then choose the ‘Run' command.

2) In the text box type "msconfig". – Across the top of the dialog box select the ‘Startup' tab.

3) The Startup Tab lists all the programs that launch at start-up. To disable any of these simply un-check the box on the left. Only non-essential programs are listed here it should be safe to un-check pretty much anything. If it turns out you needed it just go back and re-check it.

4) Once you are done re-boot the machine. 5) When the Desktop returns you will be presented with a window that says you have chosen Selective Startup. Just Check "Do not show this window again" and click OK.

To keep your computer secure, turn on automatic updates. Seems like every virus writer has nothing better to do then attack Windows operating systems. Keeping the system patches and security fixes is critical. During the setup of XP Service Pack 2 with a new computer or an up-grade you are asked whether or not to turn on automatic updates, if you made the mistake of checking no you can find this option in the Windows Security Center (Start / Control Panel) and change it back. Even with all its faults, XP is a powerful operating system that has many good security features.

Here are some more tips to help you get the most out of your operating system. Remove Windows components not found in ADD / REMOVE. Many Windows components, things like Network Services or Solitaire are easy to remove through the Add or Remove programs configuration window (Start / ControlPanel / Add and Remove Programs / Windows Components). Simply un-check them, but … some things are deliberately hidden.

A good example would be MSN Messenger. To remove this from startup follow these steps:

1) In Windows Explorer (right click Start / Explore), navigate to C:WindowsInf and make a copy of Sysoc.inf.

2) Double click on Sysoc.inf and it will open in Notepad.

3) Press Ctrl H (opens Find and Replace) and replace the string ,hide, with ,, then save and replace the file. Now all the hidden components will appear.

4) Then follow the steps above for removing programs from the startup menu.

To restore a corrupted system file: If a necessary system file should become missing or corrupted by a virus you can replace it from your Windows CD.

1) Go to Start / Search and type in the file name replacing the last letter with an underscore (ex. Filename.ex_).

2) If the file is found, open a command prompt (Start / Run, type CMD in the textbox).

3) At the prompt type expand followed by the full pathname of the file and destination (expand D:Windowsfilename.ex_ C:Windowsfilename.exe) where D: is the letter of your disc drive. If either pathname contains spaces surround the entire pathname with double quotes. If the file isn't found search again using the un-modified file name, it is probably in a CAB file, Windows treats these as folders, simply drag the new folder to the destination while holding down the right mouse button then select Copy Here.

If you feel uncomfortable performing these steps, consult an expert. Only perform these steps if you know what you are doing.

How to get the best deal on a new computer

If you’re looking for a new computer and want to get the best price, here are some tips for you.

First, ask yourself if you really need a new computer. Even though everyone seems to buy new computers every two years, in reality you can often upgrade your current computer to the latest standards for a lot less than the cost of a new computer.

It’s also possible to find refurbished computers at reasonable prices at local computer repair shops. They will usually accept your old computer as a trade in, which will save you even more money. They will also be good about repairing your computer if it malfunctions after purchasing it, without making you pay for a warranty.

You should also ask your local computer repair person which brands are the most reliable. You might be surprised at their answers. Ultimately a computer that functions well rather is more important and cost-effective than something that looks sleek and cool but is high-maintenance.

Next you should determine exactly what you will be using the computer for. Most computers have more than enough RAM and memory for the average user. Unless you are a serious gamer or use a lot of software such as Photoshop, you probably don’t need to shop for a high end computer.

There are many advantages to owning a laptop versus a desktop computer. Laptops still tend to cost more than desktops but you might save money in the long run because it’s more portable, you won’t need as large of a desk, etc.

If you aren’t savvy about computers, bring along a friend or family member who understands computers and also understands exactly what you will be using your computer for. Make an effort to fully understand the computer you are purchasing. For example, ask if it has the following features: web cam, built-in microphone, which operating system it uses, what warranty it comes with, anti-virus protection, etc.

software applications that you use on a regular basis suddenly generates an error message

If one of the software applications that you use on a regular basis suddenly generates an error message and will not allow you to continue you can try this simple guide to correcting the issue. Use this guide at your own risk. You should have a general understanding of how to install and uninstall applications and programs on your system if you plan to use this guide. If you aren’t sure what you are doing, please call and speak to one of our technicians before using these procedures. Techheads is not responsible for any data loss or other damage that may occur from using the following procedures.

Techheads cannot be held responsible for any problems that may result from the use of this checklist – if you are unsure of what you are doing please call us at.

1.If you are experiencing a problem with a software application that was recently working properly, but now generates an error message when you try to use it; the first thing to do is retrace your steps.

2.Have you installed any new software on your system between the last time you were able to successfully use the broken application and now?

3.If so, there may be a conflict between the old software and the new software that you have installed. Consult the documentation that accompanied the new and old software to see if there is any mention of restrictions or conflicts. Also, verify that your computer hardware meets the minimum requirements that you will find listed on the software installation guide(s) or packaging.

4.If you cannot think of any new software that has been installed or that might be causing a problem then uninstalling and reinstalling the program might correct the issue. If you feel that no new software has been installed and you wish to uninstall and reinstall then skip to step 9 otherwise continue to step 5.

5.Uninstalling any new program(s) that have been installed recently may free up your application to start working again. If you would like to try doing this be sure that you have at least a basic understanding of how to install and unistall software applications on your system before continuing.

6.Using the proper uninstallation procedure – uninstall the suspect application(s). If you are not familiar with the steps used to uninstall programs and applications from your system do not try these procedures.

7.After uninstalling each new application that you suspect may have been causing an issue; completely power your system down and wait at least 2 minutes before powering back up.

8.If after uninstalling any new software applications installed recently, and you have made sure to reboot your system, you are still getting an error with the problematic software; you can try uninstalling and reinstalling the application itself – But WAIT. Read on.

9.Before you uninstall your application make sure that you have the installation disk and guide that will be needed to reinstall your software. Read the installation guide carefully! Verify that all the installation disks are present and that you have the proper license key to perform an installation after you have uninstalled your application.

10.Ok, now if are sure that you feel comfortable knowing that you have everything you will need to reinstall the software, you can go ahead and uninstall your application now.

11.If you are not familiar with the process that is required to uninstall software on your system then you shouldn’t even be trying to use this guide.

12.After the uninstall is complete – power the system all the way down. Do not use restart. Do a complete system shutdown and wait at least 2 minutes before you power the system back up.

13.You can now attempt to reinstall your application and hopefully your software will be working once again.

Find your Windows Key – By CCW Technology Computer Repair – South Jordan, Utah

All Windows version requires that you enter a 25 character key (alphanumeric product key) as you install it. The Windows Product Key (also known as a CD key, the license key or just the serial number) can be found on your installation disc package or on a sticker on the case of your PC.

What happens if you just can't locate your product key and you just can't read those Windows product key stickers that manufacturer stick on a computer side because they are too small to ready – and why is it that most manufacturers are printing their production information, such as serial number, model number, etc… too small to read unless you have a magnifier glass handy?. There are few third-party tools that can help you locate your Windows product key from within Windows. The one we use and recommend is a freebie one called Keyfinder, from Magical Jelly Bean.

The Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder is a freeware utility that retrieves your Product Key (cd key) used to install windows from your registry. It also has a community-updated configuration file that retrieves product keys for many other applications. Another feature is the ability to retrieve product keys from unbootable Windows installations.
